Lost Monsters: Tayellah
There are all sorts of nasty critters in the Feywild. One of my favorites is the tayellah. Grab it here:Tayellah. (The OS patch I downloaded last week should take care of the browser-crashing issues from before. Let me know if you have problems.)
Edit: I uploaded a corrected PDF at 12:45 CST on 5/6
D&D Insider: Masquerades!
My new article on Masquerades went live last night. Subscribers can grab it here.
Embracing the Narrative
It is not enough to have rules mastery. It is not enough to be able to build interesting challenges. It isn’t even enough to create sweeping worlds with complex and detailed histories. These skills are things that a good Game Master ought to have but they aren’t replacements for good storytelling. Read more
Lost Monsters: Ha-Naga
After horrific storms and an extended power outage, I’m back! Today I give you the ha-naga, a big sexy epic solo. Grab it here (this should be safe for all): hanaga
Stuck in the Middle
Honestly, I don’t want to even start this discussion. This post might bruise some feelings and make some folks feel I’m unjustly picking on them. But I think I need to sort out why I feel the way I do every time I encounter a rough spot in the rules. Lost Monsters: Hunefer
Better late than never. Today I give you the dreaded hunefer, a foul mummy made from a fallen demigod (or something like that). Hunefer2 is for the folks who have been having trouble opening these files, while Hunefer[1] is for the ones who haven’t.
Campaign Spotlight: Revenge of the Giants
Outside the game I’m running, I play in two campaigns. Last week I talked about the Dark Sun game, so this week I’ll talk about the other campaign run by the inestimable Dan. On the surface, it has all the hallmarks of a normal fantasy campaign. A closer look reveals several unique elements that make it both fun and engaging.
D&D Insider: Weapon Master & Feats
Today, Wizards of the Coast posted the weapon master fighter and feats. Again I worked on the story text that surrounds the tech. I hope you enjoy!
Special Guest: Matt James on Submissions
Today I’m stepping back and letting fellow designer chime in with a few words on the topic of Submitting Queries. Enjoy!
I have been shocked at some of the recent uproar over submitting queries to gaming companies. Admittedly, this uproar is centered from a specific gaming community, one that I am quickly becoming burned on reading. Read more
Game Designer vs. Gamer
Ah, who needs to work today? So my weapon breakage post has ruffled a few feathers. I went back and read the post again and sure enough I came off a bit harsh. Harsh enough that some of my readers have taken offense at what I said (and I did not design the vampire btw). The problem with the post in question is that I tackled the problem from a design perspective and disregarded the story implications. Read more
